What's going on

The Calthorpe School Sports Partnership (SSP) is currently working to develop a number of projects and initiatives which will benefit the schools and young people within the partnership. Some of the current projects that are taking place within the partnership are:

1. Top-up Swimming

Top-up Swimming is a government intervention programme to assist those pupils at Key Stage 2, who have not met the 25 metre national curriculum swimming requirement. Currently pupils in school years 5 & 6 within the Calthorpe SSP who can swim 10m but not 25m are being offered free swimming lessons within the area to help them reach the 25m mark. The programme is trialling intensive swimming sessions so that pupils have swimming at least 3 times a week to help them become more confident in the water. This will culminate into a swimming festival where each child that has taken part in the programme can use the skills they have developed in a fun environment.

2. Key Stage 1 Multi Skills

Calthorpe SSP are currently running two programmes to support Multi-skill ar key stage 1.  Multi-skills are vital in the development of key fundamentals of movement; agility, balance, coordination and speed which make up the building blocks of sport.

Year 1 multi-skills - Every year 1 pupil in the partnership will have the opportunity to take part in the multi - skills event being held over 3 days in December. This is an excellent way for children to become involved in sport and the benefits it has to offer.

Year 2 multi -skills -  This year competitions will be within each cluster giving each cluster a wining school. The winning schools then compete at a central venue, in the Partnership final which should be a great occasion.

3. School Sport Coaching Programme

The new School Sport Coaching Programme is an element of the '5 hour sport offer'. It is a three-year programme which aims to target the sporty children who are currently doing at least 1-2 hours of sport each week (in addition to PE lessons). This is estimated to be approximately 25% of the population.

Schools this term have been given the options of receiving coaching in either volleyball, basketball and hockey. The University of Birmingham Volleyball Club will be delivering the volleyball coaching throughout the partnership which will culminate in a festival in January. Like wise the City fo Birmingham Basketball Club will be delivering all the basketball sessions again hosting a festival in January.

Term 2 will see more hockey coaching as well as tag rugby with term 3 seeing cricket and rugby.

Secondary schools will be receiving dance, self defense, cheer leading and boxing clubs.

4. Festivals and Competitions

There are a variety of festivals and competitions happening throughout the partnership click on the calendar to see what's happening not only in your cluster but also Partnership and City Wide.

5. Leadership Academy

The Calthorpe SSP launched it's first Leadership Academy Conference on 2nd April and this year will see it's Leadership Conference on the 21st October at the NIA.  Pupils between the age of 14-18 have been chosen from all schools within the partnership to be part of the leadership academy. The leaders will be given the opportunity to attend a variety of workshops as well as National Governing Body Qualifications. This will lead to the leaders developing and organising their own event within the partnership. Leaders will also have the opportunity to get involved with a variety of events happening in Birmingham both national and international.
