Step into Sport

WHAT IS SiS?

Step into Sport helps your people (11 - 19 year olds) to begin and sustain an involvement in leadership and volunteering in sport. We do this by providing a simple framework of co-ordinated opportunities at a local level. The principles of Step into Sport are to develop 'leadership through sport' and 'leadership in sport' with the overall aims of the programme to drive;

  • 'personal change' in young people by supporting the development of inter-personal skills, self-confidence and a sense of responsibility and
  • 'structural change' through our work with key agencies to offer broader opportunities for young people to make a formal and valued contribution to the delivery of sport

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME:

Sport relies on 1.5 million volunteers, officials, coaches, administrators and managers. The Youth Sport Trust plays a major role in supporting this need through its Step into Sport programme which grows and deploys young people as leaders and volunteers.

There are three steps to the programme:

 1. STEP ON (11 - 14 years) During PE lessons students are introduced to sports leadership and volunteering. They learn how to plan and manage their own sports season.

2. STEP IN (14 - 16 years) Young people are slightly older and therefore more confident in taking a lead. Through volunteering they learn the skills to manage and support school-based sporting events.

3. STEP OUT (16 - 19 years) Young people learn how to move from school-based to community-based volunteering. Our Leadership Academies (14-19) provide the opportunity to refine and develop volunteering skills and experiences.

Issues that this programme tackles: The purpose of Step into Sport is to increase the quantity, quality and diversity of young people involved in volunteering and leadership. It enables schools and community clubs to grow young people as leaders and deploy them as active volunteers.

How is this programme accessed? Step into Sport is accessed through School Sport Partnerships and supported by County Sport Partnerships.
