World Record Holders Visit St.Alban's!

St.Alban's Academy students got a real surprise this week when current Triple Jump World Record Holder Jonathan Edwards and former 5000m World Record Holder Dave Moorcroft visited the school as part of a surprise London 2012 presentation to Year 10 student Naaser Butt.

Jonathan was Olympic, World, European and Commonwealth Champion during his career and has held his world record jump of 18.29m since 1995. Dave, the former Commonwealth champion and European Bronze medallist, was the last European to hold the 5000m world record which he set in 1982 and it stood as the British record until last year when Mo Farah broke it.

Jonathan and Dave were given a presentation of St.Alban's best competition designs and also took part in a Y7 Multi-sports interhouse competition before presenting Naaser with his certificate and prototype design. Several of St.Alban's sports leaders were then given the chance to pose their own questions to Jonathan and Dave and were treated to some great stories and advice from the two sporting superstars!

Naaser, who last week won the Calthorpe SSP Young Male Leader of the Year award, was shortlisted at the start of the year as one of 3 entries from the West Midlands for the London 2012 Get Set "Make a Mascot" competition. After a presentation of his ideas and designs at the Olympic Park, he was selected as winner for the West Midlands region. He was then invited down to London in March to work with a top design company to develop his ideas into a regional version of the London 2012 mascot Mandeville.

He had to keep all of this secret from friends and the media until this week when he was formally announced as one of the regional winners and presented with a copy of his design. His design which represents Birmingham's history of car manufacturing and the modern vibrancy of the city will be made into pin badges and sold as London 2012 merchandise.

Naaser was thoroughly impressed with his VIP guests and showed them around the different events at school as well as being interviewed by BBC Midlands TV. Everyone had a fantastic time and St.Alban's would like to thank Jonathan, Dave and the rest of the London 2012 party for being such wonderful guests. Congratulations to Naaser for making this all happen!
